Is Tunis expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Tunis is cheap by European standards, cheaper than Morocco's big tourist cities for most daily costs. A budget day is about TND 125 per person (roughly €35–40), mid-range about TND 295, and the money goes on guesthouses in the medina, restaurant meals and a driver for Dougga.

Where the money goes
Accommodation in restored medina houses and Sidi Bou Said boutique hotels is the biggest cost. A private driver to Dougga adds about TND 250–400 per car. Restaurants in old palaces such as Dar el Jeld charge more, while local eateries are very cheap. Museums and archaeological sites are inexpensive, and the TGM and taxis cost little.
When it is cheaper
November to March (outside holidays) is the cheapest time; July and August see local holidaymakers fill the coastal suburbs.
How to spend less
- Use the TGM train for Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa.
- Insist on the meter in yellow taxis, or use Bolt.
- Eat at local restaurants and sandwich shops rather than palace restaurants.
- Buy the combined Carthage ticket to cover several sites.
- Share a driver for Dougga, or use louages to Téboursouk.
- Bargain politely in the souks.
