Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: a mid-range double in Blloku or near Skanderbeg Square runs about ALL 7,000–13,000, and many hotels quote in euros. Restaurant dinners in Blloku and the castle lanes (mains ALL 1,200–2,000) and cocktails (ALL 600–900) are the other big items. Museums cost a few hundred lek, the Dajti cable car around ALL 1,000–1,200, and buses, coffee and byrek are very cheap.
When it is cheaper
November to March (outside Christmas and New Year) is cheapest for hotels, often 20–30% below summer. In July and August many locals leave for the coast, so city prices are stable, but beach towns nearby get expensive.
How to spend less
- Withdraw lek from bank ATMs and avoid Euronet machines with high fees.
- Pay in lek rather than euros, which often get a poor rate in shops and restaurants.
- Eat byrek, qofte and set lunches in local places around the New Bazaar.
- Take the Rinas Express bus from the airport (about ALL 400) instead of a ALL 2,500 taxi.
- Agree taxi prices before getting in, or use a local app such as Speed Taxi.
- Climb the Pyramid of Tirana, which is free.
