Is Takayama expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Takayama is moderately priced for Japan: cheaper than Tokyo or Kyoto for rooms, but Hida beef and ryokan stays can push costs up fast. Expect about ¥9,500 a day per person on a tight budget, about ¥20,000 mid-range and ¥52,500 or more for comfort. The money goes on rooms, food and the bus to Shirakawa-go.

Where the money goes
Rooms take the biggest share: guesthouses near the station cost about ¥6,000–12,000 a night, business hotels ¥12,000–25,000, old-town guesthouses ¥15,000–30,000, and ryokan with dinner and breakfast ¥40,000–90,000. Food can be cheap — ramen, dango and market snacks — or expensive if you order Hida beef steak at ¥6,000–15,000. Sights are cheap at a few hundred to about ¥1,000 each, but the Shirakawa-go bus adds about ¥5,000–5,600 return.
When it is cheaper
Winter outside New Year (January–March, apart from Shirakawa-go illumination dates) and early summer are usually cheaper. Festival days on 14–15 April and 9–10 October are the most expensive and sell out months ahead.
How to spend less
- Snack on Hida beef buns and skewers in Sanmachi instead of a full steak dinner.
- Visit the free Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets for breakfast snacks.
- Stay in a business hotel with a public bath rather than a ryokan for most nights.
- Compare regional passes with single tickets; the JR Pass does not cover the Nohi buses.
- Walk the free Higashiyama walking course instead of paid sights.
- Avoid festival dates unless you are coming for them; prices and demand peak.
