Takayama on a budget: how to do it well

Walk everywhere in town; the station to Sanmachi is about 10 minutes. Rent a bicycle near the station. Highway buses from Tokyo are cheaper than trains; the Hida Wide View train from Nagoya is covered by the JR Pass.
