Is Tahiti expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Tahiti is expensive — more than most of Europe for hotels, restaurants and imported goods, because almost everything is shipped in and tourism is priced for honeymooners. Expect about XPF 13,000 (about €110) a day per person on a budget, about XPF 33,000 mid-range and XPF 76,000 or more for comfort. Beds take the biggest share, followed by tours, car hire and restaurant meals; the roulottes and the market are the main ways to save.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: family-run pensions in Papeete cost about XPF 9,000–15,000 a night, mid-range hotels on the west coast XPF 20,000–35,000, and resorts with overwater bungalows XPF 50,000–120,000, plus a per-person tourist tax and VAT. Tours and transport come next — lagoon and 4x4 tours are around XPF 8,000–12,000 each, a rental car about the same per day, and taxis are expensive. Restaurant dinners run XPF 3,500–7,000 per person, and supermarket prices are high because most goods are imported, though baguettes are price-controlled and cheap.
When it is cheaper
November to April, the warmer and wetter season, usually has fewer visitors and lower hotel rates than the dry season, especially July and August. The trade-off is heavy tropical showers, more humidity and a small risk of cyclones.
How to spend less
- Stay in family pensions, which often include breakfast.
- Eat dinner at the roulottes at Place Vaiete instead of restaurants.
- Buy fruit, coconuts and snacks at the Marché de Papeete.
- Rent a car for a couple of days rather than taking taxis or several tours.
- Visit Moorea as a day trip by ferry rather than flying or booking a package.
- Snorkel from the public beach at PK 18 in Punaauia instead of paying for a boat.
