Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in family-run pensions in and around Papeete, near town and the ferry, at about XPF 9,000–15,000 a night for a room, often with breakfast. Quiet guesthouses on Tahiti Iti start a little higher. Book ahead for July and August.
Getting around cheaply
Public buses along the coast are the cheapest option but infrequent, mainly by day. Share a rental car (about XPF 8,000–12,000 a day) for the island loop. The ferry to Moorea costs about XPF 1,500–2,000 each way. From Faa'a airport, a taxi to Papeete costs roughly XPF 2,000–3,500.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Marché de Papeete with a fresh coconut and firifiri (about XPF 800)
- Lunch: supermarket baguette and fruit picnic (about XPF 1,000)
- Afternoon: bus or shared car to the free PK 18 beach for snorkelling
- Evening: roulotte dinner at Place Vaiete (about XPF 2,000)

More ways to save
- Bring your own snorkel gear rather than renting.
- Cook in your pension if it has a kitchen; imported restaurant food is costly.
- Pick one paid tour — a Moorea lagoon trip or a 4x4 valley tour — rather than several.
- Shop on Saturday or early Sunday; many shops close on Sunday afternoon.
- Rent a scooter on Moorea at the ferry terminal instead of a car if you are travelling light.
- Travel between November and April for lower room rates, accepting more rain.
