Is Sydney expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in Australia and on a par with London or New York for hotels and eating out. A mid-range day is about A$338 per person, with the room taking about half. The good news is that its best sights, the harbour, the beaches and the coastal walks, are free or cost only a ferry fare.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: even budget hotels in Haymarket and Surry Hills cost A$150-230, and harbourfront rooms A$500-1,200. Restaurants and bars are expensive, though Asian food in Chinatown, Haymarket and Newtown is good value. Paid attractions such as BridgeClimb, Taronga Zoo and the Opera House tour add up quickly. Transport is reasonable thanks to Opal daily and weekly fare caps. Prices include GST, and tipping is not expected.
When it is cheaper
Winter (June to August, outside school holidays and Vivid) usually has the lowest hotel prices, sometimes 20-30% below summer (check current rates). Late December to January, including New Year's Eve, is the most expensive time.
How to spend less
- Use Opal fare caps: Sunday's low daily cap makes it the best day for ferry-hopping.
- Swap BridgeClimb for the free Harbour Bridge footpath or the cheaper Pylon Lookout.
- Eat in Haymarket, Chinatown, Surry Hills or Newtown rather than Circular Quay.
- Visit the free Art Gallery of New South Wales and Royal Botanic Garden.
- Buy last-minute or restricted-view Opera House performance tickets instead of a tour.
- Take the bus from the airport instead of the train to avoid the station access fee.
