Is Sri Lanka expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Sri Lanka is good value overall but not as cheap as its food and guesthouses suggest: a budget day costs about LKR 14,000 (roughly €40-45) per person and a mid-range day about LKR 37,000. The big costs are foreigner entrance fees at major sites (often quoted in US dollars), safaris and a car with driver; homestays, rice and curry and trains are cheap.

Where the money goes
For most visitors the largest items are transport and entrance fees: a car with driver costs about US$50-80 a day, Sigiriya about US$35, and safaris at Yala or Minneriya US$40-70 per jeep plus park fees. Accommodation ranges from family homestays at LKR 6,000-12,000 a double to boutique hotels and eco-lodges at LKR 18,000-35,000, which many consider the best value on the island. Local food is very cheap.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices on the south and west coasts drop from about May to October, during the south-west monsoon, often by a third or more; the east coast is cheapest from November to March, its off-season.
How to spend less
- Take the train between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella instead of a driver for that leg.
- Use the PickMe or Uber apps for tuk-tuks in Colombo and Kandy to avoid haggling.
- Choose family-run guesthouses with breakfast; home-cooked rice and curry dinners are cheap and excellent.
- Climb Pidurangala Rock (a small temple fee) for the view of Sigiriya if you want to skip the Sigiriya fee.
- Share a safari jeep with other travellers to split the per-jeep cost.
- Eat at local 'hotels' (cafés) with rice and curry rather than tourist restaurants.
