Sri Lanka on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Yes, Sri Lanka works well on a budget if you use trains, buses and homestays: allow about LKR 14,000 per person per day, with about LKR 4,000 for a bed, LKR 3,000 for food, LKR 4,000 for sights and LKR 3,000 for transport. The expensive foreigner fees at headline sites are the main budget pressure.

Getting around cheaply
Trains are cheap and scenic; reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella line sell out weeks ahead, but unreserved tickets are sold on the day. Buses are very cheap but crowded. From Colombo airport, buses run to Colombo and Negombo, and PickMe or Uber cars are reasonable. A shared car with driver costs about US$50-80 a day.
