Is Slovakia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Slovakia is one of the better-value countries in Central Europe, cheaper than Austria and generally a little cheaper than Prague for rooms and food, with a mid-range day at about €130 per person. Bratislava's old town and the High Tatras in peak season cost the most; trains, beer and local food are cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, especially in Bratislava's old town and at Štrbské Pleso and the High Tatras resorts in July–August and ski season, plus a local accommodation tax of about €1–3 per person per night. Cable cars in the Tatras are a notable expense (Lomnický štít is the priciest). Food and drink are good value, with hearty lunches and beer well below Western European prices, and trains across the country are cheap.
When it is cheaper
April–May and October–November are usually cheapest, often 20–30% below summer in the Tatras. Bratislava hotels can be cheaper at weekends outside the Christmas market season.
How to spend less
- Eat the weekday lunch menu (denné menu), often €6–9 with soup and a main.
- Take trains rather than buses or transfers; fares are low and the same on the day.
- Stay in Poprad and use the TEŽ Tatras railway rather than staying in the mountain resorts.
- Visit Bratislava Castle's free gardens and pay only for the museum if it interests you.
- Buy the motorway e-vignette online only if you drive on motorways (about €12 for 10 days).
- Hike the Tatras on foot instead of taking every cable car.
