Is Seychelles expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, the Seychelles are expensive, among the costliest island destinations in the Indian Ocean alongside the Maldives. A budget day is about SCR 1,800 per person (roughly €115) and a mid-range day about SCR 4,600. Most goods are imported, and resorts, ferries, car hire and boat tours dominate the budget; self-catering and Creole takeaways keep costs down.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost, from self-catering guesthouses to some of the world's most expensive resorts, and visitors also pay an Environmental Sustainability Levy of roughly SCR 25–100 per person per night depending on hotel size. Island-hopping by ferry or flight, car hire on Mahé or Praslin (about €40–60 a day) and boat tours to Curieuse and other islands add a lot. Restaurant meals are pricey, but Creole takeaway counters are cheap and good.
When it is cheaper
Prices are lower outside the peak periods of Christmas–New Year, Easter and July–August. May–June and September–October can bring discounts at guesthouses and resorts.
How to spend less
- Stay in self-catering guesthouses rather than resorts.
- Eat Creole takeaway plates at lunch, a fraction of restaurant prices.
- Use public buses on Mahé and Praslin instead of renting a car every day.
- Rent a bike on La Digue, where cars are few.
- Pick one or two boat tours and enjoy the free beaches the rest of the time.
- Shop at local markets, such as Victoria's Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, for fruit and fish.
