Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the largest share: a mid-range double near Avenida Paulista or in Jardins costs about R$350–700. Eating out is the city's great attraction and the second cost, from huge cantina pasta plates in Bixiga to some of South America's top restaurants; most bills add a suggested 10% service charge. Museums are moderately priced and many have free days. The metro is cheap and Uber or 99 rides across the city are usually R$20–50, but airport transfers from Guarulhos are long and pricier.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices drop at weekends and during holiday periods such as late December to January and July, when business travel slows. Rates rise during big trade fairs, the Formula 1 Grand Prix (usually November) and major concerts.
How to spend less
- Plan museum days around free entry: MASP on Tuesdays, the Pinacoteca on Saturdays.
- Use the free Japan House and Instituto Moreira Salles on Avenida Paulista.
- Book business hotels for Friday to Sunday nights, when rates often fall.
- Eat a prato feito or self-service per-kilo lunch for R$35–60.
- Take the airport express train (line 13) from Guarulhos instead of a long Uber ride.
- Visit street markets (feiras livres) for pastel and sugarcane juice.
