Is San Francisco expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the US: a budget day costs about US$165 per person and a mid-range day about US$330, similar to New York. Hotels (plus an occupancy tax of around 14%), restaurant meals with surcharges and tips, and Alcatraz or cable-car rides add up; many of the best views and parks are free.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the largest cost, from about US$140-220 for basic rooms in SoMa or the edges of the Tenderloin to US$220-380 around Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf, before the occupancy tax. Restaurant bills often include extra surcharges for staff health care or 'SF mandates' on top of sales tax and an expected tip. Alcatraz, cable cars, bike hire and day trips to Muir Woods or Napa are the other big items.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices usually dip in winter (December to February, outside the holidays) and on weekends in the business districts, often well below the autumn peak; big conferences can push rates sharply up any time of year.
How to spend less
- Use a Clipper card or contactless payment on Muni and BART; check day passes if you will ride cable cars several times.
- Take BART from SFO to downtown (about 30 minutes) instead of a taxi.
- Read menus and bills for surcharges and service charges before tipping.
- Eat in the Mission, Chinatown and the Richmond rather than at Fisherman's Wharf.
- Book Alcatraz only through the official operator, weeks ahead in summer.
- Avoid renting a car until the day you leave the city: parking is expensive and break-ins are common.
