Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, especially in Barra and boutique guesthouses in Santo Antônio, and during Carnival when rates can be three times higher. Restaurant meals are moderate, with a 10% service charge usually added. Boat trips to the islands and Morro de São Paulo, and evening shows, are the next costs. Local transport is cheap, with Uber, the metro and the Elevador Lacerda.
When it is cheaper
April to July (the rainy season) usually has the lowest prices; Carnival week and New Year are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Eat at self-service 'por quilo' restaurants, paying by weight.
- Use the metro from the airport and Uber in the city.
- Try acarajé from the baianas' street stalls instead of restaurant starters.
- Visit free churches and squares in the Pelourinho.
- Avoid Carnival if you want low prices, or book many months ahead.
- Book schooner tours at the Mercado Modelo pier and compare prices.
