Is Rotorua expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Rotorua is mid-priced by New Zealand standards: motels and food cost about what they do elsewhere in the country, but the paid geothermal parks and cultural evenings add up quickly. A budget day is about NZ$170 per person, mid-range about NZ$345 and comfort about NZ$650. Free geothermal parks and forest walks help keep costs down.

Where the money goes
Attractions are the biggest variable: Te Puia, Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu, the Treewalk and the Polynesian Spa each cost NZ$40–95, and a hāngī evening NZ$130–170, so a busy mid-range day reaches about NZ$100 in tickets. A bed costs about NZ$60 per person sharing in a Fenton Street motel, NZ$115 in the centre and NZ$250 at a lakeside lodge. Food is about NZ$50 a day with bakery pies, supermarket lunches and fish and chips, or NZ$90 with café brunch and a restaurant dinner. A shared rental car covers the geothermal valleys south of town. Prices include 15% GST.
When it is cheaper
Winter (June to August) outside the school holidays is usually the cheapest time for accommodation, and a good season for hot pools. Prices are highest in the summer holidays from late December to January and during school holidays.
How to spend less
- Look for combo tickets covering several attractions, which can save money.
- Visit Kuirau Park in town for free mud pools and steaming lakes before paying for a geothermal park.
- Choose a Fenton Street motel with a private hot pool instead of paying for spa entries every day.
- Walk the Redwoods trails for free, and pay for the Treewalk only if you want the bridges.
- Check whether hotel pickup, the hāngī meal and drinks are included before comparing cultural evening prices.
- Eat at the weekly Rotorua Night Market on Tutanekai Street for cheaper dinners than Eat Streat.
