Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels in the centre or in the motels on Fenton Street, where rooms cost roughly NZ$120–180, many with a private hot pool. Splitting a motel room between two or three people is often good value.
Getting around cheaply
Walk in the centre and use Baybus for local trips. From Rotorua Airport, about 10 km out, a taxi or shuttle takes about 15 minutes. InterCity buses from Auckland are the cheapest way to arrive. For Wai-O-Tapu and the lakes, a shared rental car or a tour with pickup is needed.
A sample budget day

More ways to save
- Pick one big geothermal park (Wai-O-Tapu for colours, Te Puia for geysers) and use Kuirau Park for the rest.
- Arrive at Wai-O-Tapu for the Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15 to see it on the same ticket.
- Cook in hostel or motel kitchens; supermarkets are much cheaper than cafés.
- Bring your own bike or rent one for the Redwoods trails instead of paying for guided rides.
- Book a hāngī evening only once, and choose one whose price includes transport and the meal.
- Visit outside the summer and school holidays, when motel prices drop.
