Is Rio de Janeiro expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Rio de Janeiro is moderately priced by international standards but one of Brazil's more expensive cities, with a mid-range day at about R$980 per person (very roughly €160). Beachfront hotels, the big sights and churrascarias cost the most; beach snacks, botecos and the metro are cheap. Prices triple during Carnival and New Year.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the largest cost: a mid-range double in Copacabana or Ipanema costs about R$500–1,100, and much more around Carnival and New Year's Eve, when minimum stays apply. The two big sights, Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, together cost around R$300 per person. Eating in Ipanema and Leblon restaurants and churrascarias is priced close to Europe. On the other hand, the beaches are free, beach snacks and juice bars are cheap, and the metro and Uber or 99 are inexpensive.
When it is cheaper
April to June and August to November (outside holidays) are usually cheapest, with hotel rates often 20–40% below the December–March summer. Carnival and New Year can triple prices.
How to spend less
- Hike the Morro da Urca trail and buy only the second cable-car leg to Sugarloaf.
- Eat a prato feito (set lunch plate) at a lanchonete for R$30–45 instead of tourist restaurants.
- Use the metro and Uber or 99, which are cheap, rather than tours.
- Drink caipirinhas and beer at botecos in Botafogo rather than beachfront kiosks.
- Stay in Botafogo or the back streets of Copacabana for cheaper rooms near the metro.
- Avoid Carnival and New Year dates if budget matters most.
