Is Playa del Carmen expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Playa del Carmen is mid-priced for the Riviera Maya: a budget day costs about MX$1,400 per person and a mid-range day about MX$3,800, cheaper than Tulum and the Cancún Hotel Zone but well above inland Mexico. Beach clubs with minimum spends, eco-parks, Cozumel dives and Fifth Avenue restaurants are where the money goes; colectivos, tacos and free beaches are cheap.

Where the money goes
Hotels near Fifth Avenue and the beach are the largest daily cost, plus a state lodging tax per night and the Visitax (roughly MX$300 per visitor). Tours and parks are the next big item: Xcaret and Xel-Há cost several thousand pesos, Cozumel snorkel boats MX$1,000-1,500, and popular cenotes MX$400-500 each. Fifth Avenue restaurants and shops charge up to double the prices a few blocks inland, often quoting in dollars at a poor rate.
When it is cheaper
May, June and November are usually cheaper shoulder months, and September-October the cheapest overall (with hurricane risk); Christmas, Easter and US spring break in March are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Take colectivos from Calle 2 and Avenida 20 to Tulum, Akumal and the cenotes instead of tours.
- Eat on Avenida 30 and the streets inland from Fifth Avenue, where prices are much lower.
- Ask for the peso price on Quinta Avenida and pay in pesos, not dollars.
- Book Xcaret, Xel-Há or Xplor online a week or more ahead for lower prices.
- Swim at Punta Esmeralda, a free and quieter beach north of Mamitas.
- Agree taxi fares before getting in; taxis do not use meters.
