Is Nicaragua expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Nicaragua is one of the cheapest countries in Central America, noticeably cheaper than Costa Rica and often cheaper than Guatemala for rooms and local food. A budget traveller needs about C$1,500 a day, mid-range about C$4,000 and comfort about C$8,500 per person (about C$36.6 to the US dollar). Tours, shuttles and surf lessons, often priced in dollars, take most of the money.

Where the money goes
Day-to-day living is cheap: fritanga street grills and comedores serve full plates for C$150–200, and chicken buses cost very little. The money goes on tours (volcano boarding, Masaya at night, lake boats), door-to-door tourist shuttles at US$15–40 per leg, and surf lessons and board rental in San Juan del Sur. Boutique hotels and resorts at Laguna de Apoyo or San Juan del Sur cost far more than hostels.
When it is cheaper
The rainy season (May–October, except July school holidays) brings lower room rates and fewer travellers, often with discounts at hostels and lodges. Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa (Easter week) are the busiest and dearest times.
How to spend less
- Ride chicken buses between León, Managua, Granada and Rivas instead of shuttles if you travel light.
- Eat at fritangas and comedores, where a full plate costs C$150–200.
- Carry small US dollar notes and córdobas; many tours accept dollars but change is often given in córdobas.
- Book volcano and lake tours through hostels, which often have competitive prices.
- Rent a scooter on Ometepe and share costs instead of hiring drivers.
- Visit Laguna de Apoyo with a hostel day pass (about US$10–15) instead of staying at a resort.
