Nicaragua on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Nicaragua is excellent for budget travel, with cheap hostels, fritangas and chicken buses. A realistic minimum is about C$1,500 per person a day: C$500 for a bed, C$500 for food, C$300 for sights and C$200 for transport.

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in hostels in León and Granada, often colonial houses with pools, with dorm and private rooms from about C$700–1,500 a double and dorm beds lower. Ometepe and San Juan del Sur have cheap hostels too.
Getting around cheaply
Chicken buses cost about C$30–100 per trip but are slow and crowded; tourist shuttles (about US$15–40 per leg) are more comfortable. The ferry from San Jorge to Ometepe costs roughly C$100–150. On Ometepe, rent a scooter (about US$20–25 a day) and share it.

- Morning: walk León's Parque Central and murals (free), then the Cathedral roof (about C$200).
- Lunch: fritanga plate (about C$180).
- Afternoon: Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián (about C$100) and the market.
- Evening: dinner at a comedor and a beer (about C$250), plus local buses (about C$100).
- Total: about C$1,500 including a C$500 bed.
