Is New Caledonia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, New Caledonia is expensive, like most Pacific islands: food, alcohol, car hire and domestic flights cost more than in mainland France or Australia, because most goods are imported. A realistic budget day is about 15,000 XPF per person and mid-range about 32,500 XPF, before domestic flights; the money goes on beds, lagoon trips and getting between islands.

Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the biggest share: beachfront hotels at Anse Vata cost about 15,000–28,000 XPF a night, Isle of Pines gîtes 12,000–25,000 XPF and resorts 40,000–90,000 XPF. Lagoon excursions are the next big item, with the Amédée Island day boat at 15,000–20,000 XPF per person. Getting around is costly too: car hire runs 6,000–9,000 XPF a day, a taxi from La Tontouta airport about 12,000 XPF, and flights to the outer islands are extra. Restaurant meals in Nouméa are priced like France or higher, so snack bars, markets and supermarkets make a real difference.
When it is cheaper
Prices vary less by season than in Europe, but April to August (the cooler months) and the hot cyclone season from January to March tend to have more availability and some lower rates; flights from Australia and New Zealand are dearer in their school holidays.
How to spend less
- Take the airport shuttle (about 3,000 XPF) instead of a taxi (about 12,000 XPF).
- Book Air Calédonie early for lower fares, or take the slower Betico ferry to the Isle of Pines.
- Self-cater from supermarkets such as Casino and eat at snack bars and the Port Moselle market.
- Stay in tribal gîtes, which are simpler but much cheaper than resorts.
- Use Karuïa buses around Nouméa rather than taxis.
- Hire a car only for the days you leave Nouméa (Blue River, Bourail).
