Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers use the few hostels in Nouméa and the tribal gîtes found across Grande Terre and the islands, where simple rooms or traditional huts cost about 6,000–12,000 XPF. Camping is possible at some sites and gîtes; book ahead.
Getting around cheaply
From La Tontouta airport, take the shuttle (about 3,000 XPF) rather than a taxi. In Nouméa, Karuïa buses cost about 210–300 XPF a ride. For the Isle of Pines, the Betico ferry is cheaper than flying. Outside Nouméa, a hire car shared between several people is often the most practical option.
A sample budget day
- Morning: bakery breakfast and a walk around Nouméa's centre and Port Moselle market (about 1,000 XPF)
- Lunch: snack bar or picnic (about 1,500 XPF)
- Afternoon: bus to Anse Vata and the Aquarium des Lagons (entry about 2,000 XPF, bus about 600 XPF return)
- Evening: sunset on Ouen Toro and a supermarket dinner (about 1,500 XPF)

More ways to save
- Bring cash to the Isle of Pines, where ATMs are scarce, and snacks from Nouméa.
- Order bougna a day ahead from a tribal gîte for a filling local meal.
- Fill a bottle from the tap in Nouméa instead of buying water.
- Group excursions like the Amédée boat on one day and keep other days free.
- Share car hire with other travellers for the Blue River and the west coast.
- Plan for Sunday closures in Nouméa and shop on Saturday.
