Is Mexico City expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Mexico City is good value: cheaper than any big European or North American city, though pricier than it was a few years ago, especially in Roma, Condesa and Polanco. A budget day is about MXN 1,100 per person and a mid-range day about MXN 2,950. Hotels and sit-down restaurants take most of the money; street food, the metro and museums are cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, especially in the popular neighbourhoods of Roma, Condesa and Polanco, where prices have risen with remote workers and visitors. Sit-down restaurants and cocktail bars in those areas are priced close to US levels. Sights are cheap: most national museums and archaeological sites cost about MXN 100, with the Frida Kahlo Museum the notable exception. Getting around costs little with the metro at MXN 5 and inexpensive Ubers. Optional extras like hot-air balloon flights over Teotihuacán (about US$150–250) are the big splurges.
When it is cheaper
Prices are fairly stable year-round. Hotels are cheapest in the rainy season (June–September outside holidays) and most expensive around Día de Muertos, Christmas–New Year and Easter (Semana Santa).
How to spend less
- Eat street tacos, tlacoyos and quesadillas at busy stalls; a filling meal costs under MXN 150.
- Use the metro (MXN 5) for daytime trips outside rush hour, and Uber or DiDi for evenings.
- Use free sights such as the Palacio Nacional murals, Chapultepec Park and the Sunday car-free Reforma between paid museums.
- Have the comida corrida set lunch at a fonda: soup, main, drink and dessert for roughly MXN 100–180.
- Book the Frida Kahlo Museum online early, as it sells out and only sells timed tickets.
- Take the public bus to Teotihuacán from the Terminal del Norte instead of a tour.
