Is Macau expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Macau is fairly expensive for hotels at weekends but cheap to explore: a budget day costs about MOP$630 per person and a mid-range day about MOP$1,380, a little less than Hong Kong. Hotels, Cotai resort restaurants and shows are where the money goes; the UNESCO Historic Centre is mostly free and buses cost about MOP$6.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: old guesthouses on the peninsula cost MOP$500-900 a double, harbour-side mid-range hotels MOP$1,000-1,800, and Cotai resorts MOP$1,800-4,500, with roughly 10% service and a small tourism tax added. Prices jump at weekends, Chinese New Year, Golden Week and the Grand Prix. Sightseeing is cheap: many of the 25 UNESCO-listed sites are free, and resort shuttles are free to ride.
When it is cheaper
Midweek nights are often far cheaper than Fridays and Saturdays all year, sometimes by half at the Cotai resorts; the hot, wet months from June to September outside holidays usually have the lowest rates.
How to spend less
- Stay midweek: Cotai resort rates can drop dramatically from Sunday to Thursday.
- Ride the free casino shuttle buses from the ferry terminals and the border; no gambling required.
- Get a Macau Pass card for buses, or carry exact change for the MOP$6 fare.
- Pay in patacas where you can; Hong Kong dollars are accepted at roughly 1:1, but change comes in patacas.
- Pick up the free heritage map at the Senado Square tourist office and focus on the free UNESCO sites.
- Take the bus over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (roughly HK$65-70) instead of the ferry.
