Is Lyon expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Lyon is moderately priced for France: noticeably cheaper than Paris for hotels and eating out, similar to Bordeaux or Marseille. A budget day is about €85 per person and a mid-range day about €185. Most of the money goes on hotels and on food, which is the main reason many people visit; sights and transport are inexpensive.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest cost, especially during the Fête des Lumières around 8 December and big trade fairs, when prices can double. Food comes next: a bouchon dinner with wine runs about €35–55 per person, and Lyon's many Michelin-starred tables cost much more. Lunchtime menus are the best value. Sights are cheap, with the Roman theatres free and most museums at €4–12. Transport is cheap, and a city tourist tax per person per night is added to hotel bills.
When it is cheaper
January–February, July–August (when locals leave and business travel drops) and November usually have lower hotel prices. December around the Fête des Lumières is the most expensive time.
How to spend less
- Eat your bouchon meal at lunch, when set menus cost much less than at dinner.
- Buy a 24- or 48-hour TCL ticket if you will use the metro, funiculars and trams several times.
- Consider the Lyon City Card (about €30–60) if you visit two or three museums plus a river cruise.
- Picnic with food from the Croix-Rousse or Quai Saint-Antoine markets.
- Visit the Roman theatres of Fourvière and the Parc de la Tête d'Or with its free zoo.
- Avoid booking during the Fête des Lumières if budget matters.
