Is Lyon safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Lyon is a safe city for visitors, with low levels of violent crime in the areas tourists use. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowds and some antisocial behaviour around stations late at night. Most visitors have no problems.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
At Part-Dieu station, on metro lines, in Vieux Lyon's crowded streets and during the Fête des Lumières. Keep bags closed and in front.
Phone theft on café terraces
Do not leave phones on terrace tables near the street.
Crowds at the Fête des Lumières
Millions attend over four nights; follow the one-way routes and keep children close.
Cyclists and scooters
Bike lanes and e-scooters are common; look both ways when crossing.
Areas and times to take care
The Presqu'île, Vieux Lyon, Croix-Rousse and the riverbanks are lively and fine at night with normal care. The areas around Part-Dieu and Perrache stations and parts of the Guillotière quarter can feel rough late at night, with occasional drug dealing; stay alert and use main streets.
Getting around safely
TCL metro, trams and buses run until around midnight, with some late services at weekends. Taxis are licensed, and Uber and other apps work. The Rhônexpress tram links Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport with Part-Dieu in about 30 minutes.
Solo and women travellers
Lyon is comfortable for solo women. The centre is busy in the evening, and public transport is reliable. Take usual care around the stations late at night and use a taxi or app if you are going far.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe. Summers can be hot, with highs of 27–28°C and heatwaves above 35°C, so carry water. EU visitors should carry an EHIC or GHIC card.
