Is Luxembourg expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Luxembourg is expensive, among the pricier places to stay and eat in Western Europe, with hotel rates driven by business travel. The big exception is transport: all trains, trams and buses are free in second class. A budget day is about €100 per person, mid-range about €190 and comfort about €385.

Where the money goes
Rooms take the largest share: even the Gare district costs about €100–150 a night, and Old Town hotels more. Restaurant dinners are expensive, although weekday lunch menus are good value. Sights are moderately priced. Public transport costs nothing across the whole country, which makes day trips to Vianden, Echternach and the Moselle cheap. Some municipalities, including the capital, add a small tourist tax per room per night.
When it is cheaper
Hotels in the capital are often cheaper at weekends and in July and August, when business travel slows; weekdays during the working year are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Stay at weekends, when business hotels lower their prices.
- Eat your main meal at lunch with a plat du jour.
- Use the free trains and buses for day trips instead of renting a car.
- Ride the free public lifts between the Old Town and the Grund.
- Picnic in the Pétrusse valley park.
- Taste Moselle wine at a cooperative rather than in city bars.
