Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: dorms, cabins and campsites cost about NOK 600–1,200, rorbuer around Svolvær, Henningsvær and Reine about NOK 1,600–3,200 a night, and upscale cabins NOK 3,000–6,000. A hire car is close to essential (about NOK 900–1,600 a day in summer) plus fuel, paid parking and ferries. Restaurant meals are expensive at NOK 300–500 for a main and about NOK 120 for a beer, and alcohol beyond beer is sold only at Vinmonopolet shops. Most of the best things — hikes, beaches and views — are free.
When it is cheaper
Late August and September are often a little cheaper than July, and winter rates outside the February–March aurora and skrei peak can be lower. Summer remains the most expensive season.
How to spend less
- Self-cater in a rorbu with a kitchen; supermarket prices are about a third of café prices.
- Buy breakfast and lunch at the Coop and Rema stores in Svolvær and Leknes.
- Share a hire car and book it early for July and August.
- Fill your water bottle from the tap; it is safe and excellent.
- Book the Moskenes–Bodø car ferry in advance to avoid long queues.
- Pick one paid boat trip and spend the other days hiking free trails.
