Is Kenya expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Short answer

Kenya can be done at very different price levels, but safaris make it expensive compared with everyday costs in the country. A budget safari-style trip is about KSh 24,500 per person a day (roughly US$190), mid-range about KSh 58,000, and the money goes on park fees, safari vehicles and camps, especially in the Masai Mara.

Where the money goes

Park and conservancy fees are the single biggest cost, set in US dollars and sharply higher in the Mara since 2024. Accommodation inside or near the reserves usually includes meals and drives, so it absorbs most of the budget; conservancy camps cost KSh 100,000–250,000 a night. Safari vehicles and drivers, or light-aircraft flights, add transport costs. Outside the parks, food and local transport in Nairobi and the coast are much cheaper.

When it is cheaper

The long rains (roughly April to May) and the short rains (November) bring the lowest lodge rates, often much below the July–October peak, and Mara fees drop to about US$100 from January to June.
