Is Kavala expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No, Kavala is good value for Greece: cheaper than Athens, Thessaloniki's waterfront or the popular islands, with fish tavernas well below island prices. A realistic budget day is about €65 per person, mid-range about €130, and the money goes mostly on your room, seafood dinners and day trips to Philippi and Thasos.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost, from €45–75 behind the harbour to €80–150 in Panagia or at the western beaches, and €180–400 at the Imaret and boutique hotels. Food is cheap by Greek standards if you eat sardines, mussels and meze with tsipouro; whole fish priced by the kilo is where bills climb. Transport adds up if you want to see Philippi and Thasos: a rental car costs about €35–55 a day, and the Thasos ferry is extra, at a few euros per foot passenger and more with a car. Greece also adds a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee, higher from April to October.
When it is cheaper
Outside July and August hotels are noticeably cheaper, and from November to March rooms are cheap while Philippi and the old town stay open; May, June and September offer a good balance of price and weather.
How to spend less
- Stay in the centre behind the harbour (about €45–75 a night) and walk up to Panagia.
- Take the KTEL bus to Philippi instead of a taxi.
- Cross to Thasos as a foot passenger from Keramoti and rent a car on the island if you only go for a day.
- Order sardines, anchovies and mussels rather than whole fish by the kilo.
- Check menu prices before sitting at the view tables in Panagia, or have a drink there after dinner in the centre.
- Buy kourabiedes from the pastry shops by the box rather than in single pieces at cafés.
