Free things to do
- Walk the lanes of Panagia, the old town on the headland
- See the Kamares aqueduct arching over the city centre
- Walk to the lighthouse at the tip of the Panagia headland
- Watch the fishing boats at the quay below Panagia
- See the bronze equestrian statue of Mehmet Ali in the square by his house
- Swim at Batis or Kalamitsa beaches west of the centre
Cheap eats
- Bougatsa with custard or cheese: about €3–4.50
- Pita souvlaki or gyros from a souvlaki shop: a few euros
- Grilled sardines: about €7–11 a plate
- Anchovies in vine leaves: about €7–10
- Carafe of tsipouro with meze: about €5–9
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in the centre behind the harbour, where doubles cost about €45–75 a night, walkable to Panagia, the bus station and the port. Kavala has few hostels, so small hotels and rooms are the budget option; prices drop outside July and August.
Getting around cheaply
Walk the centre and Panagia. City buses go to Batis and Kalamitsa, and KTEL buses to Philippi (about 20–25 minutes) and Keramoti for Thasos ferries. From the airport, about 30 km east, a taxi takes 30–35 minutes. KTEL buses link Kavala with Thessaloniki in about 2–2.5 hours.
A sample budget day
- Morning: bougatsa in the centre, then the castle and Panagia (castle a few euros)
- Lunch: souvlaki pita or a sardine plate by the harbour (about €8–10)
- Afternoon: Kamares aqueduct, the lighthouse and a swim at Batis (city bus a couple of euros)
- Evening: meze and tsipouro in a tsipouradiko (about €12–15)
- Total: about €30–35 plus your bed (€30), so roughly €65
More ways to save
- Visit Philippi early by KTEL bus and combine it with the river at Lydia nearby.
- In tsipouradika, ask how the house works; often each carafe comes with a small meze.
- Ask for a receipt (apodeixi) and send back bread you don't want if it is charged.
- Travel in May, June or September for good weather and lower prices.
- Eat lunch in the centre where locals eat, and save the Panagia views for a drink.
- Buy picnic supplies at bakeries before a Thasos day trip.
