Is Kathmandu expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No, Kathmandu is one of the cheapest capitals in Asia for visitors, cheaper than Bangkok and far cheaper than any European city. A realistic budget day is about NPR 4,100 per person and mid-range about NPR 10,200; the main costs are the entrance fees for foreigners at the heritage sites, Thamel restaurant meals and, above all, mountain flights and treks if you add them.

Where the money goes
For budget travellers the surprise is entrance fees: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath and Patan cost about NPR 1,000 each for foreigners and Bhaktapur about NPR 1,800, so a heritage-heavy day can cost more in tickets than in food. Accommodation is cheap in Thamel (NPR 1,500–4,000 a room) and moderate in Lazimpat, Patan or Boudhanath; heritage hotels run NPR 15,000–35,000. Eating local is very cheap, but tourist restaurants in Thamel charge NPR 1,000–2,500 per meal. Hotels often add 13% VAT and a 10% service charge on top of listed prices. The big extras are outside the city: an Everest mountain flight costs around US$200–250.
When it is cheaper
Room rates are usually lower in the monsoon (roughly June to September) and in the cold, smoggy months of December to February, often noticeably below the October–November and March–April peaks.
How to spend less
- Register your Durbar Square ticket with your passport so it is valid for more than one day.
- Use the Pathao or InDrive apps instead of street taxis, or agree the fare before getting in.
- Eat dal bhat at local places, where refills are often free.
- Check whether hotel prices include the 13% VAT and 10% service charge.
- Stay in Bhaktapur overnight rather than paying for a return taxi the same day.
- Fill in the Nepal visa form online before you fly and carry cash for the fee.
