Is Hue expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Hue is cheap by international standards and slightly cheaper than Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Hoi An for food and rooms. Expect about ₫600,000 a day per person on a tight budget, about ₫1,600,000 mid-range and ₫4,200,000 or more for comfort. Entry tickets to the Imperial City and the royal tombs, plus transport out to the tombs, are the main costs.

Where the money goes
Sightseeing takes a bigger share than food: the Imperial City and each tomb charge separately, and a car with driver to the tombs costs roughly ₫600,000–900,000 for half a day. A private dragon boat on the Perfume River is roughly ₫300,000–600,000 an hour. Rooms are good value, from ₫200,000–600,000 in the backpacker streets to ₫700,000–1,500,000 for a riverside hotel. Street food is very cheap; a full dinner in a garden restaurant or an imperial-style set menu costs ₫300,000–800,000 per person.
When it is cheaper
The rainy season, roughly September to December, is the quietest time, and hotel rates are often lower then; the trade-off is heavy rain and flood risk in October and November. Tết (Lunar New Year) and Vietnamese holiday weekends push prices up.
How to spend less
- Buy a combined ticket for the Imperial City and the tombs instead of separate tickets.
- Visit the three main tombs (Tự Đức, Minh Mạng, Khải Định) in one half-day trip by car or motorbike taxi.
- Agree the full price of boats and cyclos before you get in, and decline 'free' shop stops.
- Eat where prices are on the wall, or ask 'bao nhiêu tiền?' before ordering.
- Rent a bicycle from your hotel for about ₫50,000 a day for the citadel and Thanh Toàn bridge.
- Take the train to Da Nang rather than a private car over the Hai Van Pass if you do not need the stops.
