Is Ethiopia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Ethiopia is cheap for day-to-day living, but the historic route is not a cheap trip: many entry fees, guides and lodges are priced in US dollars, and domestic flights are the biggest cost. A budget day is about 6,500 birr per person, mid-range about 15,000 birr and comfort about 36,000 birr, before domestic flights.

Where the money goes
Domestic flights are the largest cost unless you fly in on Ethiopian Airlines and book the internal flights together, which can cut fares by around half. Next come dollar-priced entry fees (Lalibela, Axum, Gondar, the Simiens), guides, scouts and drivers. Hotels and lodges outside Addis Ababa vary widely in quality for the price. Food, coffee and local transport are very cheap. The birr has fallen sharply since it was floated in 2024, so birr prices change quickly.
When it is cheaper
Lodges and flights are cheapest in the rainy months from June to September; prices and demand peak around Genna (7 January) and Timkat (19–20 January), when Lalibela and Gondar must be booked far ahead.
How to spend less

- Order beyaynetu, the vegan fasting platter, on Wednesdays and Fridays for a cheap, varied meal.
- Agree guide and driver prices in advance and in writing, including currency.
- Apply for the e-visa only on the official portal, evisa.gov.et; copycat sites charge more.
