Ethiopia on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Ethiopia can be done on a budget for food and local transport, but entry fees, guides and flights keep the historic route from being very cheap. Plan on about 6,500 birr per person per day (bed 2,000, food 1,200, sights 2,500, transport 800), plus domestic flights.

Free things to do
- Walk up Mount Entoto for the view over Addis Ababa
- Visit the Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa (by donation)
- Walk the Piazza district, Addis Ababa's Italian-era centre
- Watch the Timkat processions in the streets in January
- Walk the palm-lined Lake Tana shore in Bahir Dar at sunset
- Join a coffee ceremony, often offered with a meal in local restaurants and homes
Cheap eats
- Shiro (spiced chickpea stew) with injera: one of the cheapest meals
- Beyaynetu (vegan fasting platter): about 400–900 birr in local restaurants
- Tibs (sautéed meat) with injera: a local restaurant standard
- Macchiato or buna (coffee): about 50–100 birr
- Fried tilapia by Lake Tana in Bahir Dar
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in simple guesthouses in the Piazza area of Addis Ababa and in town guesthouses along the route, for about 2,500–5,000 birr a room; check hot water and generators before paying.
Getting around cheaply
In Addis Ababa, the light rail and minibuses are cheapest, and ride-hailing apps are cheap and safer than street taxis. Between towns, buses are cheap but slow, and in some regions unsafe; flights on Ethiopian Airlines are the practical choice.
A sample budget day
- Morning: National Museum of Ethiopia to see Lucy (about 250 birr)
- Lunch: shiro or beyaynetu with injera (about 500 birr)
- Afternoon: Holy Trinity Cathedral and the walk up Mount Entoto by ride-hail (about 800 birr transport)
- Evening: coffee and a local dinner (about 700 birr)
- Total: about 2,300 birr plus your bed (about 2,000–2,500 birr), so roughly 4,500–5,000 birr in Addis Ababa
More ways to save
- Travel between October and March but outside Genna and Timkat if you want lower lodge prices.
- Share a guide or driver with other travellers to split the cost.
- Carry small birr notes; many places cannot change large notes.
- Check whether a price is in birr or US dollars before agreeing.
- Bring a torch and socks for Lalibela rather than buying them there.
- Fly the circuit in one direction to avoid backtracking through Addis Ababa.

Common questions
Can I visit Ethiopia on a budget?
Partly: food and local transport are cheap, but entry fees and guides add up. Plan on about 6,500 birr a day plus flights.
Are prices in birr or dollars?
Local prices are in birr, but many entry fees, guides and lodges are quoted in US dollars.
Do I need a guide?
In Lalibela an official guide helps a lot, and the Simiens require a scout; hire them at official offices.
