Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: about €35 per person sharing on a budget, €65 in a patio hotel in the Judería and €140 in a palace hotel with a rooftop pool. Food is about €25 a day with toast for breakfast, a tapas lunch and tapas in the evening, or €45 with a sit-down meal and wine. Sights are cheap for a major heritage city: the Mezquita (about €13), the Alcázar (€5–6) and Medina Azahara (€1.50) together cost under €25. The centre is walkable, so transport costs only a few euros, plus a taxi or tourist bus to Medina Azahara.
When it is cheaper
July and August, when the heat often passes 40°C, and the winter months outside Christmas usually have the lowest hotel prices. May is the most expensive month, with the Cruces de Mayo, the Fiesta de los Patios and the Feria; book early or expect much higher rates.
How to spend less
- Eat the menú del día at lunch, typically €14–18 for several courses.
- Order in tabernas where a tapa comes with your drink, and stand at the bar rather than paying terrace prices.
- Check whether the Mezquita's early free entry slot before morning mass is running on your day.
- Walk ten minutes north to Santa Marina, San Lorenzo or the centre for better-value tabernas than those next to the Mezquita.
- Visit the patios during the Fiesta de los Patios in May, when entry to dozens of private patios is free.
- Come by AVE as a base or day trip and skip a car: driving in the old town is restricted and parking costs money.
