Is Charleston expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Charleston is expensive by US standards, especially for hotels in the historic district, which cost more than in many larger American cities. Expect about US$160 a day per person on a tight budget, about US$330 mid-range and US$620 or more for comfort. Rooms, restaurant meals with tax and tip, and parking take most of the money; walking the old streets is free.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest cost: rooms within walking distance of King Street and the Market run about US$220–380, historic inns south of Broad Street US$400–900, and accommodation taxes of roughly 13–14% go on top. Downtown hotels also charge about US$30–45 a night for parking. Food is the next big item, because menu prices exclude sales and hospitality tax (roughly 10–11%) and an expected 18–20% tip, so a sit-down meal costs about 30% more than the menu suggests. Paid sights — Fort Sumter, a historic house, a plantation at US$30–40 — add up if you do one or two a day.
When it is cheaper
January and February, and to a lesser extent the hottest weeks of July and August, usually have lower hotel rates than spring and autumn. Spring weekends and the Spoleto Festival in late May and early June are the most expensive times; check rates for your dates.
How to spend less
- Stay in North Charleston or West Ashley, where chain hotels with free parking cost about US$120–180, and drive or ride in.
- Use the free DASH trolleys between the Visitor Center, King Street and the Market instead of rideshares.
- Have your big Lowcountry meal at lunch or brunch, when prices are often lower than at dinner.
- Check the bill for an automatic gratuity before tipping again, especially with a group.
- Choose one plantation and one historic house rather than paying for several.
- Use city garages rather than street parking to avoid tickets and towing.
