Where the money goes
Accommodation dominates: even simple guesthouses away from the beach start at CI$150-250 a night, and beachfront resorts run CI$600-1,500, before tax and service. Food is expensive because nearly everything is imported, so restaurants and even supermarkets cost more than in the US. Activities such as diving and Stingray City trips add a lot, and taxis charge high fixed fares. US dollars are accepted everywhere at about CI$1 to US$1.20, so watch how prices are quoted.
When it is cheaper
Prices drop in the low season from about mid-April to mid-December, often by 20-40% at resorts (check current rates). The trade-off is hurricane season from June to November, with September and October the riskiest.
How to spend less
- Rent a condo with a kitchen and shop at Foster's or Kirk Market to cut restaurant costs.
- Use the public minibuses along the West Bay Road instead of taxis during the day.
- Snorkel from shore at Cemetery Beach, Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto instead of paying for boats.
- Rent snorkel gear for the whole stay rather than per trip.
- Look for happy hours and local spots in George Town, Bodden Town and the East End.
- Check whether prices are in CI$ or US$; paying in US$ at a rounded rate can cost more.
