Free things to do
- Seven Mile Beach, public along its whole length
- Shore snorkelling at Cemetery Beach in the north of Seven Mile Beach
- Shore snorkelling at Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto in George Town
- Hell, the black limestone formations in West Bay
- The East End blowholes and the Wreck of the Ten Sail memorial
- Starfish Point on the north coast (look, do not lift the starfish)
Cheap eats
- Jerk chicken from roadside stands: about CI$10-15
- Cayman-style fish or fish rundown at an East End local spot: CI$18-30
- Beef or chicken patties from a bakery: a few dollars each
- Conch fritters at a beach shack: about CI$10-15
- Supermarket picnic on the beach: CI$15-20 for two
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in guesthouses and apartments in George Town or Bodden Town, away from the beach strip, at about CI$150-250 a night for a double. There are no traditional hostels, so sharing a condo with a kitchen is often the best value.
Getting around cheaply
Public minibuses run from the George Town depot to West Bay, Bodden Town and the East End for about CI$2.50-3.50, but thin out at night. From the airport, Seven Mile Beach is 10-15 minutes by taxi (about CI$20-35). For the East End, rent a car for a day or two (about CI$50-80 a day).
A sample budget day
- Morning: snorkel from shore at Cemetery Beach with your own gear (free)
- Lunch: patties and a drink from a bakery (about CI$10)
- Afternoon: minibus to West Bay and Hell (about CI$6 return)
- Evening: supermarket dinner on Seven Mile Beach at sunset (about CI$20)
- Total: about CI$170 including a shared room
More ways to save
- Travel in the low season (mid-April to mid-December) for much lower room rates.
- Share a Stingray City boat with a group tour rather than a private charter.
- Rent a car only for the East End days; use minibuses on Seven Mile Beach.
- Bring snorkel gear and reef-safe sunscreen from home to avoid island prices.
- Check cruise-ship schedules and visit Stingray City on non-ship days for a better experience.
- Look for weekly specials at local restaurants, such as fish fry nights.
