Is Carcassonne expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Carcassonne is moderately priced for France: cheaper than Paris or the Côte d'Azur, but La Cité itself charges tourist prices. Expect about €75 a day per person on a tight budget, about €140 mid-range and €300 or more for comfort. The money goes on rooms, restaurant meals and a car or tour for the Cathar castles.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest cost: simple hotels near the station start at about €60–95 a night, the Bastide Saint-Louis and the Trivalle area below La Cité are about €90–160, and hotels inside the walls run €200–450. Food is next, and prices are noticeably higher inside La Cité than in the lower town, where lunch menus are €15–22. Sights are modest — the Château Comtal and Cathar castles each cost about €7–14 — but the castles need a hire car or a minibus tour. Walking between the two towns is free.
When it is cheaper
Prices are usually lower from November to March, outside school holidays, and in May, June, September and October compared with July and August. Hotels can rise sharply around 14 July and during the summer festival.
How to spend less
- Eat in the Bastide Saint-Louis around Place Carnot, where lunch menus are cheaper than inside La Cité.
- Walk the streets and the Lices of La Cité for free; pay only if you want the Château Comtal and ramparts.
- Visit the free Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and the Musée des Beaux-Arts (check opening days).
- Walk or cycle the Canal du Midi towpath instead of paying for a boat trip.
- Stay in the lower town near the station for cheaper rooms, trains and the airport shuttle.
- Order the lunch formule rather than à la carte at dinner; it is the best-value meal of the day.
