Is Carcassonne safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Carcassonne is a safe town, and most visitors have no problems. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in the crowded lanes of La Cité in summer, car break-ins at parking areas, and heat and wind at the Cathar castles. Serious crime against visitors is rare.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

The main street of La Cité and the Porte Narbonnaise get very crowded at midday in July and August. Keep bags closed and in front of you.

Car break-ins

Do not leave luggage or valuables visible in cars parked below La Cité or at castle car parks.

Heat

July and August highs average about 30–31°C and can be higher. Visit La Cité early or late and carry water.

Cathar castle paths

Paths to Peyrepertuse, Quéribus and Lastours are steep and exposed to strong wind. Wear good shoes; access can be closed on stormy days.

Areas and times to take care

La Cité, the Bastide Saint-Louis and the canal are fine to walk by day and in the evening. As in many French towns, the area around the train station can be quiet late at night; use common sense and stick to lit streets.

Getting around safely

Taxis are available by phone or at ranks; the trip between the Bastide and La Cité is about €10–15. A summer shuttle bus links the two towns (check timetables). Trains to Toulouse and Narbonne are reliable. Cars cannot enter La Cité; use the paid car parks below the walls.

Solo and women travellers

Carcassonne is comfortable for solo women. Eating alone in cafés and restaurants is normal. Usual precautions are enough; at night, walk back over the Pont Vieux or the main streets rather than through empty side lanes.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Sun protection and water are important in summer, especially at the exposed castles. Pharmacies (green cross) are easy to find in the Bastide.

Emergency: 112 (European emergency number). In France also 15 for medical emergencies (SAMU), 17 for police and 18 for fire.
