Is Cappadocia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Cappadocia itself is moderately priced, cheaper than most of Western Europe for food and pensions, but the signature experiences are not: a sunrise balloon flight costs about €150–300 and cave hotels with balloon-view terraces are in high demand. Without the balloon, a budget traveller needs about ₺2,700 a day, mid-range about ₺7,100 and comfort about ₺19,500 per person. Many hotels and balloon operators quote in euros, and lira prices change quickly with inflation.

Where the money goes
The balloon flight is the biggest single cost and is not included in the daily figures. After that, accommodation: simple Göreme pensions start around ₺1,500–3,000 a double, but a cave hotel with a terrace for watching the balloons costs ₺4,000–8,000 and luxury cave suites with pools ₺12,000–30,000. Entry tickets to the open-air museum, underground cities and Zelve are priced for foreigners and add up over several days, as do organised tours if you do not drive.
When it is cheaper
Hotel rates and balloon prices are usually lowest from November to March, when flights are more often cancelled for weather; the busiest and dearest periods are April to June and September to October. Exact differences vary year to year and with the exchange rate.
How to spend less
- Watch the balloons from a viewpoint (Sunset Point above Göreme or a hotel terrace) instead of flying if your budget is tight; the sight is free.
- Book the first two nights so you have a spare morning if the balloon flight is cancelled for wind.
- Rent a car or scooter for a day to visit the valleys and villages instead of joining several tours.
- Walk the valleys (Rose, Red, Love, Pigeon) from Göreme; most trails are free.
- Eat in Avanos, Mustafapaşa or the villages, where prices are lower than on Göreme's main street.
- Pay in lira when you can; prices quoted in euros often include a margin.
