Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: resorts on the Tourist Corridor cost MX$9,000–30,000 a night, and even mid-range hotels near Medano Beach are well above most of Mexico. Boat trips (the Arch, whales, sunset cruises, snorkelling at Cabo Pulmo) are the second big item, followed by eating and drinking at the marina and beach clubs, where loungers may come with a minimum spend. Taxis are expensive and transport adds up if you explore the corridor and day trips; a rental car costs about MX$700–1,500 a day plus insurance. Hotels add VAT and a state lodging tax, so check what quoted rates include.
When it is cheaper
Late spring and summer (roughly May to October, outside holiday weeks) usually bring lower hotel rates, but August to October is the hottest, most humid and the peak of the hurricane season. Prices are highest around Christmas and New Year and in spring-break weeks.
How to spend less
- Eat a few blocks inland from the marina, where tacos cost MX$40–70 instead of marina-front prices.
- Pay in pesos, not dollars, and choose to be charged in pesos on card machines.
- Take a shared shuttle or the local bus instead of a private transfer from the airport.
- Snorkel from shore at Santa María or Chileno Bay with your own gear instead of paying for a boat tour.
- Ask about the minimum spend before sitting on a beach-club lounger.
- Say no to 'free' tours and meals offered by timeshare sellers; the presentation takes hours.
