Is Boston expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the United States, especially for hotels, which rank with New York and San Francisco. Plan on about US$135 a day per person on a budget, US$300 mid-range and US$670 for comfort. The good news is that the Freedom Trail and many historic sites are free, and the compact centre can be walked.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest expense by far: even simple rooms in the centre often cost US$200 or more, and hotel taxes add about 15–17%. Eating out is the next cost, made higher by the 18–20% tip expected in sit-down restaurants and by sales tax on meals. Paid attractions — the MFA, the Gardner Museum, Fenway Park tours and whale watching — are priced at US$25–80 each. Transport, in contrast, is cheap: the T is inexpensive, and the Silver Line from the airport is free.
When it is cheaper
January to March is the low season, when hotel rates can be far lower than in September and October; the trade-off is cold and snow. Avoid college graduation weekends (May) and move-in weekends (late August–September), when rooms are scarce and expensive.
How to spend less
- Take the free Silver Line (SL1) bus from Logan Airport to South Station instead of a taxi.
- Walk the Freedom Trail yourself; the route is marked by a red brick line and most sites are free.
- Look up free and reduced-price museum hours, such as the MFA's free admission days and discounts for visitors with library passes.
- Stay in Cambridge or Somerville near the Red Line for lower hotel prices than Back Bay or the Seaport.
- Eat lunch rather than dinner at popular seafood restaurants, and get a lobster roll at a fish market counter.
- Use a CharlieCard or the MBTA's contactless payment for cheaper rides and easy transfers.
