Is Boston safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Boston is one of the safer large cities in the United States, and visitors in the central neighbourhoods rarely have problems. The realistic risks are phone and bag theft, crowds on game days and winter weather. As anywhere in large US cities, take more care late at night in quieter areas.

The real risks

Theft

Phones and bags are snatched occasionally on the T and in busy areas. Keep phones in your hand or pocket away from train doors.

Late-night areas

Around Downtown Crossing, parts of the Boston Common and the Theater District late at night, there can be people in distress and occasional incidents. Use main streets and avoid empty parks after dark.

Massachusetts Avenue / Melnea Cass area

The area sometimes called 'Mass and Cass' in the South End has a visible drug and homelessness crisis. Visitors rarely need to go there; avoid it on foot, especially at night.

Winter weather

Snowstorms (nor'easters) can close roads and delay flights between December and March. Wear proper boots, as pavements can be icy.

Traffic

Boston drivers and cyclists are fast, and the street plan is confusing. Look both ways and use crosswalks.

Areas and times to take care

Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the North End, the Seaport, Cambridge and the waterfront are all comfortable to walk, including in the evening. Visitors take more care late at night around Downtown Crossing, the edges of the Boston Common and the area around the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard. Normal big-city awareness is enough elsewhere.

Getting around safely

The T is generally safe, but service ends around midnight to 1:00, so check the last train before going out. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber, Lyft) are widely available, including at Logan Airport from the designated pick-up area. Driving is not recommended in the centre: streets are confusing and parking is expensive.

Solo and women travellers

Boston is generally comfortable for solo women, with a large student population and lively streets in the evening. Use ride-hailing rather than walking long distances alone late at night, avoid empty parks after dark, and keep an eye on your drink in bars. Daytime walks along the Freedom Trail, the Esplanade and Cambridge are popular with solo travellers.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and good to drink. Summers are humid and occasionally hot (about 28°C average highs in July and August), and winters cold, with average lows below freezing from December to March. Medical care in the US is excellent but very expensive, so travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 911 for police, ambulance and fire.
