Is Beijing expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Beijing is good value by the standards of world capitals: cheaper than Tokyo, Seoul or Western Europe, though pricier than most of inland China. A budget day is about 310 yuan per person, mid-range about 910 yuan and comfort about 2,700 yuan; hotels and Peking duck dinners are where the money goes.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, particularly in central Dongcheng and Wangfujing. Sights are cheap individually, but a few in a day (Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace through tickets) and a Great Wall trip with transport add up. Street food and noodle shops are inexpensive; famous duck restaurants and international hotels are priced like other big cities. The metro is very cheap, while private cars to the Great Wall cost much more than public buses or group tours.
When it is cheaper
Winter (November to March, excluding the Spring Festival) usually has lower hotel prices and some reduced winter ticket prices; prices rise sharply during Golden Week in early October and around the Spring Festival.
How to spend less
- Ride the metro everywhere; it is cheap, fast and signed in English.
- Buy the through ticket (lianpiao) at the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace rather than paying for each hall separately.
- Eat breakfast and lunch at street stalls and noodle shops, and save Peking duck for one dinner.
- Visit Mutianyu by public bus or a shared group tour rather than a private car.
- Avoid tea-house and art-student invitations near tourist sights, a common way to lose money.
- Travel outside Golden Week and the Spring Festival, when hotel prices peak.
