Is Austin expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Austin is moderately expensive by US standards: cheaper than New York or San Francisco but no longer a bargain, with a mid-range day at about US$255 per person. Hotels are the main cost, and prices triple during SXSW and Austin City Limits; food, music and many sights are good value.

Where the money goes
Most of the budget goes on the room: downtown and South Congress hotels run about US$180–320 a night for a double, plus about 17% in combined state and city occupancy taxes. Restaurant prices look reasonable but exclude the 18–20% tip and sales tax, so add roughly a quarter to menu prices at sit-down places. Sights are cheap (the Capitol and the bat flight are free, museums about US$15–20), and the real extras are rideshares, drinks at music bars and, if you go, a rental car for the Hill Country.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually lowest in the summer heat (June to August) and in January and early February. They spike sharply during SXSW in mid-March, the Austin City Limits festival weekends in October, the Formula 1 race at Circuit of the Americas in autumn and big University of Texas football weekends.
How to spend less
- Check the dates of SXSW, ACL, the Formula 1 weekend and UT home games before booking, and avoid them if you can.
- Fill up on breakfast tacos (US$3–6) and food trucks instead of sit-down lunches.
- Use the free sights: the Texas State Capitol tours, the Congress Avenue bat flight and the Lady Bird Lake trail.
- Take airport bus 20 (about US$1.25) instead of a US$25–40 rideshare.
- Look for music venues with free early shows or happy hours; many bars on Red River and South Congress have low or no covers.
- Stay in East Austin or Riverside, where motels and hostels cost far less than downtown.
