Is Agra expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Agra is cheap for food, rooms and transport by European standards, but the monuments use foreigner ticket rates that are much higher than those for Indian citizens, so sights are the biggest daily cost on a budget. A budget day is about ₹2,900 per person, mid-range about ₹7,000 and comfort about ₹20,500.

Where the money goes
On a budget, sights are the largest item at about ₹1,300 a day, because one Taj Mahal visit alone costs around ₹1,300 with the mausoleum; Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and the smaller tombs add more. A bed costs about ₹700 per person sharing in a Taj Ganj guesthouse, ₹2,500 mid-range and ₹10,000 in a luxury hotel with Taj views. Food is about ₹600 a day on street breakfasts, chaat and thalis, or ₹1,500 in local restaurants. Transport is about ₹300 a day by auto-rickshaw, or ₹1,000 and more with app taxis and a day car to Fatehpur Sikri. A licensed guide adds roughly ₹1,000–2,000.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are generally lowest in the hot months (April to June) and during the monsoon (July to September), when fewer tourists come; ticket prices for monuments do not change with the season. Prices are highest from October to March, especially around Christmas and New Year.
How to spend less
- Buy Taj Mahal tickets online to skip the ticket queue, and decide in advance whether you want the extra mausoleum ticket.
- Plan Agra Fort, the Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri for Friday, when the Taj is closed, so you do not lose a paid day.
- Agree the fare before every auto-rickshaw ride, or use an app taxi to get a fixed price.
- Choose the petha shop yourself rather than letting a driver take you to one that pays him commission.
- Tell your driver where you want to eat before setting off, to avoid commission buffet restaurants on the way to the Taj.
- Share a day car to Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra (roughly ₹2,000–3,000) between two to four people.
