Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in homestays and guesthouses in Kuta Lombok and Tetebatu, at about Rp 250,000–500,000 a night for a room, with simple breakfasts often included. The Gilis also have hostels and basic bungalows, though prices rise in July and August.
Getting around cheaply
From the airport near Praya, Kuta is about 30 minutes by taxi or arranged transfer. Ride a scooter locally (about Rp 70,000–100,000 a day) if you are experienced, and share a car with driver for long days. The cheapest route from Bali is the public ferry from Padangbai to Lembar (about 4–5 hours); to the Gilis, take the public boat from Bangsal.
A sample budget day
- Morning: scooter to Tanjung Aan and swim (scooter about Rp 80,000 a day, plus parking a few thousand rupiah)
- Lunch: grilled fish at a warung behind the beach (about Rp 50,000–100,000)
- Afternoon: walk up Bukit Merese (free)
- Evening: ayam taliwang and plecing kangkung in Kuta (about Rp 60,000)
- Total: about Rp 250,000–300,000 plus your bed (about Rp 200,000), so roughly Rp 500,000
More ways to save

- Bring your own snorkel mask to avoid rental fees on the Gilis.
- Use the public ferry instead of fast boats if time allows.
- Eat lunch from warung counters, the cheapest full meal on the island.
- Ask your guesthouse for a trusted driver rather than booking through tour desks.
