Labuan Bajo on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Partly: life on land is cheap, but you cannot see Komodo without paying for boats and park fees. A realistic minimum is about Rp 1,000,000 a day per person — around Rp 200,000 for a bed, Rp 150,000 for food, Rp 600,000 for boat trips and park fees averaged over the stay, and Rp 50,000 for transport.

Budget travellers stay in guesthouses and hostels on the main street, at about Rp 250,000–500,000 a night, a few minutes from the harbour and boat offices.
Getting around cheaply
Walk or take ojek rides in town (Rp 20,000–60,000). Rent a scooter for about Rp 100,000–150,000 a day. Fly from Bali (about 1 hour); the airport is 10 minutes from the harbour.

- Morning: warung breakfast (about Rp 30,000) and a shared boat day (park fees and boat averaged at about Rp 600,000)
- Lunch: usually included on shared boats
- Afternoon: snorkelling stops on the boat trip
- Evening: grilled fish at Kampung Ujung (about Rp 120,000)
- Total: about Rp 1,000,000 including a guesthouse bed (about Rp 200,000) and an ojek ride
More ways to save
- Travel in the shoulder months (April–June, September–November) for lower prices and calm seas.
- Book a 2-day, 1-night phinisi trip; it covers more sites than two separate day trips for a similar price.
- Bring your own snorkel mask if you have one; rentals add up.
- Refill water bottles at your guesthouse instead of buying plastic bottles.
- Book directly with operators in town rather than through resellers.
- Plan one or two boat days and spend the others on cheaper land trips.
